Simpler Recycling

‘Simpler Recycling’ is the name given to this new set of regulations created by DEFRA and is designed to make recycling clearer and standardised and to ensure core recycling collections are taking place throughout the country. Currently, recycling requirements vary between local authorities, leading to confusion and inefficiencies. The new system aims to ensure that all businesses and households follow the same rules, making recycling easier and increasing overall recycling rates.

It will affect businesses from March 31st, 2025 onwards. The end goal is to have 3 waste streams: General Waste, Mixed Recycling, and Food Waste. We are providing many of these services for our clients; and please contact your account manager, who will be able to assist you with the best choices for your office, provide any quotes and make all the necessary arrangements to ensure compliance with the new legislation.

From 31 March 2025, businesses will be legally required to separate recyclable waste into specific categories:

  1. Dry Recyclables – Includes plastics, metal, glass, paper, and cardboard. Paper and card must be collected separately unless a waste management provider has assessed and approved combined collection.

  2. Food Waste – Businesses generating over 5kg of food waste per week must separate and recycle it.

  3. General Waste – Non-recyclable waste that does not fit into the above categories.

By ensuring consistent waste separation, Simpler Recycling aims to reduce landfill waste and improve recycling efficiency across the country.
